Weather or Not

You’ve most likely heard the saying, “If you don’t like the weather in (fill in the place), wait a few minutes.” Unfortunately, sometimes rather than a few minutes, it can be days before you see a change in the weather. And, if you plan a trip expecting good weather and you don’t get it, disappointment may follow. So, hope for the best but plan for the worst, I always say. That’s good advice for weather and, indeed, all things travel.

In January, 2014, part of my extended family spent a week on Isla Mujeres, Mexico, just off the coast of Cancun. When we arrived, the weather was perfect, a welcome change for our group of winter weary midwesterners.

The ferry ride to the island was pleasant with blue skies and warm breezes.  We rented golf carts to get around the island during our stay and we were looking forward to seeing the villa my brother, Paul, had arranged to accommodate all of us.

Casa Mimosa did not disappoint.  My friend, Gail, said, “It’s the kind of place you see in magazines but you never think you’ll stay there.”

So, without a doubt, we thought we had a piece of heaven for the week.

Then it rained for the next four days with blustery winds and cool temps.  So what do you do on a tropical vacation in paradise when the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Connect with people (irony)

Connect with people.  Play games.  Read a book.  Go to the grocery store.  Shop for souvenirs.  Go to a restaurant.  Have a party.  Take a nap.  Nothing too creative here but the point is, you can’t control the weather but you can control your attitude and your reaction.  So do something.

Here’s the main thing.  Wherever you are and whoever you’re with, you’re making memories.  So make them count.

  1. Looks like you rose above above the storm and had a great time! We have had a few soggy vacations, too, but I usually don’t mind too much. 🙂
